A nationwide study by Tampere University and the University of Helsinki has found a significant decline in both academic performance and attitudes toward school among Finnish ninth-graders. The Learning to Learn assessment conducted in spring 2024 indicates that students today are not only performing worse than in previous years but are also increasingly disengaged from their education.The results show a marked drop in skills and learning-related beliefs compared to previous assessments in 2001 and 2017.

Finland must build between 31000 and 35800 new homes per year over the next two decades to meet housing demand according to a report by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The total need by 2045 is estimated at 600000 to 700000 homes.The figures are based on population forecasts from Statistics Finland and the Ministry of Finance.

Kela paid national and guarantee pensions to approximately 544000 people in 2024 with total pension payments reaching €2.64 billion. The number of recipients has steadily declined reflecting rising earnings-related pensions and fewer people qualifying for state support.Starting in February 2025 Kela will no longer pay national pensions to recipients living in EU and EEA countries Switzerland or the UK due to a legislative change.

The Finnish government last year issued a decree that effectively converted the municipality-specific limits for housing costs that can be counted toward social assistance from non-prescriptive to prescriptive. Helsingin Sanomat on Wednesday revealed that the assistance was cut for about 25000 of the 43000 social assistance recipients whose housing costs exceeded the limit in December 2024.

Electricity prices in Finland will reach their highest level of the winter on Friday driven by freezing temperatures and low wind power production.The average price for the day will rise to 19.7 cents per kilowatt-hour nearly double Thursdays price of 9.6 cents. The highest hourly price will be recorded at 6 p.m. when electricity will cost over 37 cents per kilowatt-hour according to data from the Nordic electricity exchange Nord Pool.
