On August 2 2021 Bukola Agbakaizu a journalist with Ogun State Television (OGTV) collapsed and died while covering the inauguration of a new traditional ruler in Ogun State. A bill seeking to convert the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) into a full-fledged university has passed its second reading in the Nigerian Senate. The bill sponsored by Senator Adebayo Osinowo aims to upgrade the institution to a university status in order to improve its academic standards and provide more opportunities for students. Yabatech which was established in 1947 is one of the oldest tertiary institutions in Nigeria and has been offering diploma and certificate courses. The conversion to a university will allow the institution to offer degree programs and compete with other universities in the country. The bill will now move to the committee stage for further deliberation.
